Every filename appearing in Drive does not prove all content is local. A local backup needs access to file contents.
Streaming and mirroring
Google says streaming primarily keeps content in the cloud, with offline access requiring local preparation. Mirroring keeps a full local copy of My Drive and uses more disk space. Edits propagate in both modes. See Google’s official documentation.
Synchronization and a dated copy
A sync folder is a working copy; a backup preserves an earlier state. Yesterday’s successful archive may help after a mistaken edit discovered today.
A backup must actually have completed before the mistake. A sync icon is not recovery history.
Before archiving
- Check the real source path.
- Prepare offline content or consider mirroring if space allows.
- Wait for downloads and synchronization.
- Test a small folder and recover samples.
Docs, Sheets and Slides may have local links rather than ordinary standalone content. Consider an appropriate export format.
Two different operations
Reading a local folder and uploading an encrypted archive to Drive are different workflows. A successful upload does not prove every source file was captured. Check selected sources, results and recovered samples. Keep all archive parts. Drive integration may remain limited to configured test users; review release notes.
Start small
Test downloading, archiving and restoring a few files before using years of photos. Repeat when paths or sync settings change.
